The world's northernmost sovereign capital — and the launchpad for almost every Iceland trip. Colourful corrugated houses, a brutalist cathedral, and a harbour that smells of whale-watching boats and saltcod.. Colourful corrugated houses, a brutalist cathedral, and a harbour that smells of whale-watching boats and saltcod.
Reykjavík does what it does deliberately small. Two thirds of Icelanders live in its metro area, but the city centre is twenty walkable streets — coffee, art, music, and a remarkable density of bookshops.
Most travelers stay one or two nights either side of their road trip. The right move is to give it three: one for the harbour-and-cathedral tourist circuit, one for the Sky Lagoon and a real night out, one for the museums you'll regret missing. The Settlement Exhibition, the Saga Museum, and Harpa are each worth half a day.
Every route in this guide starts and ends here. Keflavík airport sits 50 km southwest on Reykjanesbraut.
Honest, not cynical. These are the things returning visitors tell first-timers.
Bankastræti, Laugavegur, Skólavörðustígur — three streets contain most of the cafés, shops, and the cathedral view. Walk them slowly.
Many cafés open at 10 or 11. Þrír Frakkar and Reykjavík Roasters are the early-open exceptions.
Whale-watching boats leave from the Old Harbour. Sky Lagoon is in Kópavogur, 15 min south. Don't confuse the two pickup points.
Zones P1–P4 by colour. P1 (red) is the most central and most expensive. Pay via the Parka app or kiosks — fines are immediate.
Drive to Grótta lighthouse (Seltjarnarnes) or Heiðmörk forest park. City glow ruins it from downtown.
Capital weather is often calm while 30 km away storms are closing roads. Always check vedur.is for your destination, not RVK.
Workable year-round. Summer brings festivals and 21h daylight; winter offers Christmas markets, hot pools in the snow, and aurora drives in 20 minutes.

The rainbow street leads the eye to the cathedral. Best mid-morning when the light hits the spire west-east.
Steel sculpture on Sæbraut. Faces north — sunset light wraps it from behind in summer.
Olafur Eliasson's hexagonal glass shifts colour. Long exposure inside the atrium also works.
10 min drive to the lighthouse. Hot tubs are private — Kp 3+ and clear skies make the trip worth it.
