Geysir
The eponymous geyser. The original is mostly dormant; its neighbour Strokkur erupts every few minutes, a column of boiling water up to about 30 m high.
Why this place matters.
The Great Geysir gave its name to every geyser on Earth — and then went mostly quiet around 1915. Its neighbour Strokkur, very active since its conduit was drilled out in 1963, picked up the work and erupts every few minutes (University of Iceland Science Web).
The whole site is a 30-minute loop: walk past the smaller hot pools (Litli-Geysir, Blesi, Konungshver), arrive at Strokkur, watch the blue dome that forms in the moment before eruption, then return via the café. Bigger trips combine it with Þingvellir and Gullfoss as the Golden Circle.

Honest, not cynical. These are the things returning visitors tell first-timers.
The steam plume drifts with the wind. The downwind side gets soaked. Read the steam direction before you settle in.
An eruption every few minutes = constant churn. Lookouts fill 30 seconds before, empty 10 seconds after. Patience pays.
Right before eruption, the water forms a blue lens above the vent. Fast shutter and ready finger — it lasts under a second.
Geothermal pools here are 80–100°C. Stay on the marked paths. Children should be held at the vent rim.
Less intense than Hverir or Krýsuvík. Sensitive travelers manage fine here.
Geysir Glíma serves Icelandic lamb soup and skyr. Bigger meals at Friðheimar tomato farm (10 min back toward Reykholt).

Year-round. Steam contrasts dramatically against winter snow; summer brings the highest crowds. Strokkur erupts whatever the season.
Light, shaped by ice.
Position 90° off the sun line. Steam catches the light and the eruption arc reads cleanly.
Pre-focus on the vent. 1/500s or faster. Burst mode helps catch the splitting instant.
Cold air condenses the plume sharply. Black-and-white processing works particularly well.
Crouch at the boardwalk edge. Foreground hot pool + vertical eruption + sky — three elements stacked.
